Watch Beirut natives Batia and Moise Shems describe their experiences on the opposite sides of the local Alliance Israelite Universelle school, which was physically divided into neighboring boys and girls sections. They recall the original campus, which existed until it was leveled by a 1950 terror bomb that nearly killed all the students. Moise shares eyewitness testimony of the aftermath of the bombing and the attack’s lingering impact on his life. They recall the school’s principal, Madame Penso, and janitor who both died in the attack, as well as share happier memories of school life in the tense but bustling Jewish quarter of Wadi Abu Jamil during a bygone era.
